Tempest

Lights on windows down hair whipping in the wind

I drove hellbent to escape the danger

miles behind me cracks in the road creating

the ominous soundtrack to my fear

Fear in the eyes in the mirror that haunt me

I’ve run and I’ve run and in the night I feel

how he gets nearer and is coming closer

the one who chases, the one who will punish

and beside me on the seat sitting in the glass jar

a soul and the heart that keeps it alive

and the dirt that choked us as we sped through the night

he’s coming closer no matter how far I run

he listens for the fear that sounds within me

breathes in my guilt as it passes on the wind

coming closer as he steps through the shadows

blending into the night

dead ahead a storm is growing

I pull to the side and take stock of my options

turn around to certain death or chance this tempest before me

gear in drive and pedal to metal I race for freedom

lightning strikes and thunder bellows

rain is like knives slashing through the windows

tires slick and sliding on wet pavement

not slowing down never stopping

getting closer closer closer

I can almost feel his hot breath on my neck

car stops, and I’m stranded dead center

storm rages and whips around me and I know

he’s here and I’ve nowhere to hide

flash of light and the car disappears

frozen and trapped inside a lightning bolt

and the shadows grow darker

shifting longer and growing closer

I’m in the middle of his rage

standing center and facing my justice

consequences for my crimes

darkness reaches out

his cold hand presses against my mouth

trailing down and covering me in darkness

he pulls my hair back and his eyes are on fire

and I’m trembling in terror when his lips capture my own

and he’s thought about this, planned every second

chasing and trailing and planning and his anger rising

he sucks all my breath and keeps sucking and I know

he’s mastered my own power using it against me

and my soul is leaving and deserting me

the fury of the storm is reaching higher

frothing and foaming around me

reaching its crescendo and boiling the earth

my soul is swallowed whole

death, defeat, dark and diminished

he smiles and backs away, one step then two

and as he slowly disappears his hand the last to go

I see my beating heart and hear his laughter

his victory and I’m devastated with his retreat.

I started writing when I was very young. Then I was mortified on a bus full of people when one of my stories was read aloud. I lost my focus and quit. Now, I'm trying to find my voice and my ambition. I love to write, good or bad. So, I'm doing it here and now. Thank you.
